Edouard van Remoortel conducts...
14.09.2010, 09:35

Edouard van Remoortel (30 May 1926, Brussels – 16 May 1977, Paris) was a Belgian conductor. He studied cello and conducting at the Brussels conservatory. He was affiliated with the Belgian National Orchestra as of 1951. From 1958 to 1962, van Remoortel was music director of the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra (SLSO). He was appointed after a successful guest-conducting appearance with the SLSO. However, troubles soon developed between him and the orchestra, because of his relative youth and conducting inexperience, and also because of personality clashes with the musicians. In his first season, he attempted to dismiss 42 of the orchestra's musicians, and in return, they voted at one point not to play for him. His last season with the SLSO featured him as conductor in only seven subscription concerts, and his contract was not renewed. While in St. Louis, van Remoortel did make a guest conducting appearance with the St. Louis Philharmonic, a non-professional community orchestra separate from the SLSO.

Friederike Sailer
Born: February 20, 1926 - Regensburg, Germany
The German soprano, Friederike Sailer, wanted originally to become a kindergarten teacher and after her marriage she lived in Ansbach. By coincidence she discovered her voice, with which she sang initial at Operetta theatres. Then she moved to the Nurnberger studio of the Bavarian broadcast, where she made her first parts in opera. From 1952 Friederike Sailer was engaged by the State Opera of Stuttgart, at which she worked since that time. In 1954 and 1955 she made guest appearances with Stuttgart’s ensemble at the Grand Opéra in Paris, including, among other roles, the Marzelline in Fidelio. In May 1957 she sang at the Festival of Schwetzingen in the premiere of the opera Der Revisor by W. Egk, and in May 1966 in the same Festival in Der Tod des Empedokles by Hermann Reutters. She made guest appearances, particularly in lyric roles, at the Munich State Opera and at other major opera and concert halls. In 1959 she sang at the Festivals of Salzburg as 1st Lady in Die Zauberflöte, and in 1958 at Festival of Glyndebourne as Gretchen in Wildschütz by Lortzing. Friederike Sailer was esteemed also as an oratorio and Lieder singer. She held a teaching job at the Musikhochschule Stuttgart. Friederike Sailer's recordings appeared on Columbia (Bach Cantatas), on Erato (Cantatas of F.W. Zachow), MMS (Meermädchen in Oberon) and on Eurodisc. On the Opera label she sang the solo in the German Requiem by J. Brahms, on Nixa in the opera Rodelinda by Georg Frideric Handel, on Memories Kunigunde in Hans Sachs by Lortzing, and on Gala Die Zauberflöte (Salzburg, 1959).

Peter Mosbacher (* 17. Februar 1912 in Mannheim; † 9.
